Watching older students participate over the past few years in the York High School tradition of the “King and Queen of the Couch” spirit competition was all the motivation four friends needed to take their turn this year.

Seniors Jake Hansmann, Sean Solem, Sebastian Rohn and Will Ahern, who collectively designated themselves “Fruit of the Dukes,” were named the 2019 King and Queen of the Couch at Friday’s homecoming pep rally in a packed gym, which preceded York’s 17-3 football victory over Lyons Township.

The boys were chosen from a field of seven school spirit groups in the competition, which started about 10 years ago in place of naming a homecoming queen and king. Each of the groups has been earning favor for school spirit efforts since the school year began.

By winning this year’s competition, Fruit of the Dukes earned the right to watch the evening’s football game while sitting on an old couch that was placed on sideline at the 30-yard line.

“It’s really cool to win, to be chosen as King and Queen of the Couch,” Hansmann said after the announcement was made at the pep rally. “It’s really fun because it brings the whole school together. We thought it was really fun when we watched the past few years, so that’s why we decided to get involved.”

Hansmann said he, Solem, Rohn and Ahern spent hours trying to come up with a good name for their group.

“Someone had Fruit of the Loom underwear on, that’s where we got it,” he said.

While Fruit of the Dukes received an ovation after being named as winner of the King and Queen of the Couch competition, homecoming, in general, had most in the gym for the pep rally excited.

“It’s nice to have the whole school united, with everyone feeling happy and spirited,” said senior Emily Sadowicz, captain of the York cheerleading squad.

“The whole week leading up to the homecoming game is fun, with people decorating the halls and having a fun time,” said senior Zach Wiygul
