The sheriff’s office reports making three impaired driving arrests and issuing more than 62 seat belt citations during the recent Labor Day :Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” traffic safety campaign.
The additional enforcement actions under the campaign were conducted in order to help remove drunk and drugged drivers from the roadways and increase safety restraint compliance, officials said.
The sheriff’s office issued a total of 162 citations varied citations during the campaign.
“Keeping people safe on our roadways is a significant priority of our Patrol Division. We far too often see the tragic aftereffects caused when someone makes the reckless decision to drive drunk or high,” Sheriff John Idleburg said in the release.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office joined forces with law enforcement throughout Illinois for the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.
The program is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation with federal funding managed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
During the designated period for the increased enforcement, running from Aug. 16 through Sept. 3, Gurnee police made two DUI arrests and two felony warrant arrests, and officers issued 17 citations for vehicle safety restraint violations.
Gurnee officers also issued eight speeding tickets, cited two uninsured motorists and issued one citation for driving on a suspended or revoked license.
According to a Gurnee police release, the grant-funded patrols included eight officers working a total of almost 40 extra hours to conduct the campaign.
The crackdown was funded by a grant from IDOT’s Bureau of Safety Programs and Engineering and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
