Alex Morgan, who celebrated the biggest goal of her career by pretending to sip a cup of tea, says the celebration was an homage to Game of Thrones actor Sophie Turner and that criticism of it mostly stems from a double standard.

Not just a generic double standard; specifically, that

“You see men celebrating all over the world in big tournaments, grabbing their sacks or whatever it is. And when I look at sipping a cup of tea, I am a little taken aback by the criticism.”

Morgan is right that there are popular male athletes who grab their sacks (or whatever it is) — sometimes even each other’s — and are broadly celebrated, but it’s fair to point out that they also create nearly USWNT-levels of blowback and pearl-clutching. The NFL once threatened to kick Marshawn Lynch out of a game for wearing gold shoes. The history of wild male celebrations is also the history of scorching hot takes.

Like their (mostly black) male counterparts, Morgan says the USWNT is in a not-fun Catch-22, that they “feel like we have to be humble in our successes and have to celebrate, but not too much or in a limited fashion.” That’s a familiar one for any athlete who doesn’t fit a narrow, Jeter-ian conception of “classiness,” and being a woman pretty much automatically puts you outside of that.

Here’s hoping Morgan has something even funnier planned for the final against the Netherlands on Sunday.
