Carl Sanders likes it when people blow their horns or give him a thumbs up when he is out driving his 1946 Chevy Fleetmaster.
It is the kind of reaction many of owners of such old cars receive on the road. People may often wonder where motorists like Sanders are headed. and had her in the garage from a young age.
“Cars have always been a passion in our lives,” she said.
The Merrillville-Ross Township Historical Society museum is open 2 to 4 p.m. on Sundays through October, except for holiday weekends. Admission is free.

On Sunday, it was to the Merrillville-Ross Township Historical Society for its annual antique car show.
Sanders, of Lake Station, was there with his Fleetmaster, which still has the original 216 motor that was “souped up.”
“It’s fun to drive,” he said.
Sanders, like many antique car owners at the event, are members of the Winamac Old Auto Club, which was founded in 1950 and is the oldest antique auto club in Indiana. One of those 100-plus members is Roy Foreman, who is also president of the Merrillville-Ross Township Historical Society. Foreman said the car show has been going on there for about 10 years as a way to show off not only the automobiles but the museum itself.
Foreman had his 1929 Ford parked on the front lawn of the museum. He’s had the car for 26 years.

“For a lot of us, it started off when we were kids,” he said of the interest in antique cars. “My uncle had old cars, and I always liked going over there to look at them. As soon as I became of age, I was ready to buy one and fool around with it myself.”
Scott Kiechle of Knox has about 35 antique cars when you include the ones he uses for parts. Kiechle restores the vehicles and on Sunday brought his 1951 Studebaker Commando.
“I like the friendship and the group of people here,” Kiechle said.
