Darron Cummings / APThe 2012 East semifinals against the Pacers had been an uneven ride for Wade, including just five points in a Game 3 loss that dropped the Heat to a 2-1 deficit in the best-of-seven series. But by series' end, there was little doubt about Wade's resolve, closing out the series with a 41-point, 10-rebound performance in Game 6 of a 105-93 win at Indiana on May 24, 2012 -- an effort needed with Chris Bosh sidelined earlier in the series. The Heat would go on to win the first of their two Big Three championships that postseason.

Michael Laughlin / Sun SentinelIf the shot against the Hornets was his introduction, then the next series against the Indiana Pacers in 2004 was his official coming-out party. The Heat team would eventually fall to the more experienced Pacers, but not before Wade put his stamp on the series. In the fourth quarter on May 10, a driving 6-foot-4 Wade then elevated over 6-11 Jermaine O'Neal for a thunderous dunk.
Michael Laughlin / Sun SentinelWith the Heat facing elimination, Wade flashed back to his old self against the Charlotte Hornets April 29, 2016. The Heat were trailing 3-2 in the series and playing on the road. Wade found inspiration from a courtside Hornets fan wearing a purple shirt. He answered the fan's constant heckling by scoring 23 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, of the Heat's 97-90 victory. After hitting a jumper while falling down, Wade jumped to his feet and began taunting the fan. The Heat went on to win the series in seven games.
Michael Laughlin / Sun SentinelA day after being acquired from the Cavaliers at the trading deadline, and 1 1/2 seasons after leaving the Heat, the only team he had known for his first 13 NBA seasons, Wade makes a triumphant return to AmericanAirlines Arena in a 91-85 victory over the Bucks on Feb. 9. 2018, coming up with a critical late steal. It is the start of a closing run culminating with this "One Last Dance" retirement season.

Wilfredo Lee / ASSOCIATED PRESSIf not pulled with one minute remaining just one point shy of Glen Rice's franchise record on April 12, 2009 against the Knicks, the milestone would have been Wade's. But when the 50-point mark is reached before the start of the fourth quarter and the 55 are achieved with 5 minutes still to play, there is only so much work required.
Michael Laughlin / Sun SentinelGame 4 of the 2013 NBA Finals had LeBron James thinking back to 2006. Once again, it was one of those "vintage" Wade moments. He had 32 points on 14-of-25 shooting against the San Antonio Spurs in a pivotal game that allowed the Heat to tie the series at 2. They eventually won the franchise's third championship. The performance, which also included six rebounds, six steals and four assists, came after Wade spent most of the playoffs hearing how he was riding the coattails of James. Robert Duyos / Sun SentinelWade's everlasting moment against the Bulls on March 9, 2009 will go down as one of the greatest shots in Heat history. With the scored tied at 127 in double-overtime, Wade stole the ball from Bulls guard John Salmons. As time was expiring, he dribbled the length of the court and hit a running 3-pointer for the victory. Wade then capped the night by jumping on the scorer's table in front of the raucus crowd and proclaimed, "This Is My House."
Robert Duyos / Sun Sentinel SoFlaShareOn Nov. 12, 2009 Cleveland Cavaliers center Anderson Varejao was on the receiving end of one of the best dunks in league history. After James missed a dunk on the other end, Wade felt it was the perfect opportunity to show his future teammate how it's done. Wade grabbed the rebound, dribbled the length of the court and threw down a vicious one-handed dunk over Varejao. How bad was it? The impact of the play sent Varejao falling back on the ground and into the basket support. TNT announcer Reggie Miller offered, "Welcome to your Kodak moment, Anderson Varejao!" After the game, even James had to praise Wade. "It was great, probably top 10 all-time," James said. "That was an unbelievable play by a great player."

Michael Laughlin / Sun SentinelThe 2008-09 season was considered a bounce-back year for Wade. He had dealt with injuries the previous two years but recovered in a major way. He averaged 30.2 points and captured his only regular-season scoring championship. After leading the Heat to the first round of the playoffs, many felt Wade was deserving of the Most Valuable Player award. The honor instead went to LeBron James. Among the big games that season for Wade were a 50-point night against the Orlando Magic and a 41-point, nine-assist, seven-steal, seven-rebound effort versus the Cavaliers.

CHARLIE NEIBERGALL / ASSOCIATED PRESSTechnically, this wasn't an NBA moment. But to Pat Riley, it was. As legend goes, Riley was working out on a treadmill prior to coaching a Heat game while watching Marquette defeat Kentucky 83-69 on March 29, 2003, in the Midwest Regional final of the NCAA Tournament. That's when the fascination took hold with the Marquette guard who would close with 29 points and 11 assists in the victory. Two months later, Wade would go to the Heat at No. 5 in the NBA draft.

The organization officially became his after he outshined star center Shaquille O'Neal, leading the Heat to a 4-2 series victory against the Dallas Mavericks. It was the first championship in franchise history. Wade's numbers were staggering. He averaged 34.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.7 steals. The performance was so great ESPN ranked it as No. 1 in Finals history.

And then Wade to the rescue, scoring 12 of the Heat's final 20 points in a 42-point, 13-rebound effort in the 98-96 win. Three games later, the franchise had its first NBA championship, with Wade averaging 34.7 points over the six games.
RON T. ENNIS / MCTAlthough he never won regular-season MVP, Wade captured this honor in the 2010 NBA All-Star Game. He had 28 points, 11 assists, six rebounds and five steals in front of a packed house of 108,000 AT&T Stadium in Dallas. In all, Wade had 13 All-Star appearances with the Heat.

Joe Cavaretta / Sun SentinelYes, it was just a regular-season game, but this Feb. 12, 2006 victory was against heated rival Detroit, the team the Heat would need to push past for what would turn into the franchise's first championship that season. So there was Wade, scoring the Heat's final 17 points, including a game-winning 16-footer with 2.3 seconds to play in the 100-98 decision. Wade would close with 37 points, rallying the Heat from a 90-83 deficit with 4 1/2 minutes to play.

The end of the road will come on the road, barring a late playoff-race miracle.
But Tuesday night at AmericanAirlines Arena will undoubtedly be the most meaningful moment of this “One Last Dance” Dwyane Wade retirement tour.
It is a moment that Wade has both braced for and yet been unable to fully comprehend, with the Miami Heat having scheduled a pregame commemoration prior to Tuesday night’s matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers at AmericanAirlines Arena.

“I’ve never been in this situation before,” the franchise’s all-time scoring leader said. “I know all my family’s going to be there. So I’m just looking forward to it, close a chapter.
“I really don’t know what’s going on. I’ve seen some things. I really haven’t been focused on it. I appreciate whatever is going on.”
And yet it is not any of the trappings, but instead the moment that Wade appreciates will resonate most.
“It’s been incredible. It’s been amazing,” he said of a 16-season NBA career that has called South Florida home for all but 1 1/2. “A lot of people in that arena have watched me grow, have watched me be imperfect and make a lot of mistakes in life, and watched me blossom and watched me do amazing things, great things. So I’m thankful for it.
“I’m thankful for that drive up. It’s been a consistent in my life for a long time. So it’s definitely going to be emotional, poignant, if my last drive away from that arena is if I’m not coming back to it.”
The odds are stacked against a return playoff engagement, the Heat needing five almost improbable results to fall their way to make the postseason. Otherwise a career that began as the No. 5 pick in the 2003 draft out of Marquette by the Heat will end on the road Wednesday against the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center.
“Hopefully things go our way where we can come back to that arena for the playoffs,” he said, “but it’s going to be emotional regardless.”
And not only for Wade.
“It’s going to be special, man, just what he’s done for the game of basketball in general,” teammate Justise Winslow said. “He’s inspired and motivated and helped so many basketball players, whether they make it to the NBA or not, just the motivation and inspiration that he’s provided for the game of basketball is great.
“Obviously we’re teammates, but just to be at the arena on Tuesday, it’s a big ticket, a hard ticket to get. I got a free ticket, but it’s going to be a lot of fun, it’s going to be crazy.”

Even with the playoffs still in play, teammates plan to savor the moment.
“[There’s] going to be a lot of emotions,” guard Goran Dragic said. “I’m happy that I’m going to be there. But at the same time, sad, because you don’t want to see those kinds of players leave. I think he still has a lot left in his tank, but you’ve got to appreciate he’s going out on his own terms. Every athlete wants to finish on his terms.”
Winslow said the final ticks, are when the moment truly will resonate.
“I’m sure it’s going to be a little weird and emotional, especially toward the end of the game,” he said. “But it is what it is. He’s had a great career.”
Only in recent days has the finality of it all hit home, the impending last game in a building where more than once Wade, 37, has made it clear that, “This is my house!”
“I love Dwyane. I wish this could last longer,” coach Erik Spoelstra said. “But all great things must come to an end. I absolutely respect that he’s doing it on his terms. I wouldn’t expect anything less.
“I respect him so much, for the Hall of Fame player he is, but because of who he is as a person, a father, husband, it’s all that. That’s why he really transcends just the game and why he has such a global following. It’s not just because he’s a talent on the basketball court. He’s a guy that people really relate to, a role model you want your kids to act and behave like him, with that kind of dignity.”
And one who appreciates it also will be a night about all the support staff, those who made so many nights at AmericanAirlines Arena so much more tolerable.
“My grandma, when I was young, she just always instilled in us, treat others in the way you want to be treated. For the most part, you can get that back,” Wade said.
“That’s kind of how I’ve been. Someone who treats me in a certain way or talks to me at a certain way, then I’ve got to come at them that way. But if you treat me nice, treat me with respect, I do the same thing,”
