Neighborhood bakery and sandwich spot Panes Bread Cafe — situated right off the Wellington Brown Line stop since 1994 — has started a GoFundMe campaign to ask its neighbors for a bit of help.

The fundraiser, simply titled “Help Panes Bread Cafe,” was started March 15 by Antonio Murillo, the son of longtime owners Eduardo and Karen Murillo. As of Wednesday afternoon, the GoFundMe had raised $2,485 of its $5,000 goal in the first 11 days online.

According to the campaign description, the fundraiser comes in response to city policies that have increased insurance and tax costs.

“Unfortunately, owning a business in such a large city does have it’s (sic) problems. Panes is looking for your help,” the description reads. “They are asking for any small or large donation in order to keep up with costs for the coming year. This support and any donation is much appreciated and loved by the owners. Thank you!”

Tribune reached the cafe by phone, but the owners did not comment. Antonio Murillo, the campaign organizer, declined comment through a GoFundMe representative.

The GFM rep said Tuesday that Panes plans to keep the fundraiser active for an additional two weeks.
