New Lenox police are urging residents to lock their vehicle doors after a string of burglaries to vehicles were reported recently.
Police said that on Wednesday night into Thursday, 11 vehicles were burglarized in the Crystal Cove, Wellington and Schoolhouse Manor neighborhoods.
Among the items reported stolen were a laptop computer and an iPad.
A police officer attempted to contact a suspicious driver in the area at the time but the driver fled in the vehicle at a high rate of speed, police said.
Surveillance footage of what appears to be someone burglarizing a vehicle is posted on the police department’s Facebook page. The person first tries a pickup truck that is locked before moving on to a sedan that is unlocked.
Police said they also tried to make contact with the driver of a suspicious dark SUV at about 4 a.m. March 19 before that driver fled at a high rate of speed.
And on March 17 about 3:30 a.m. police arrested three juveniles suspected of committing burglaries to vehicles.
Police said they were unable to develop sufficient evidence to link the juveniles to any recent burglaries and released them to their parents with citations for curfew violations.
“We have significantly increased our presence in our residential neighborhoods while still fulfilling our other obligations to the community,” police said in a statement.
