On Wednesday, Steppenwolf Theatre Company announced that longtime ensemble member Randall Arney will direct its upcoming revival of Sam Shepard’s “True West,” the production that first launched the company onto the national scene in 1982.
Arney joined the company in 1984, during the play’s initial wave of attention. After the success of “True West,” the company remounted the show at the Apollo Theater Chicago for an extended run before it transferred to New York. For the Apollo run, Arney joined the cast as “Saul” alongside ensemble members Jeff Perry (Austin) and John Malkovich (Lee), with Gary Sinise directing.
The 2019 show will feature ensemble members Jon Michael Hill and Namir Smallwood. “True West” runs July 5 – Aug. 18, 2019 in the Downstairs Theatre.
