Inclement weather slightly shortened Libertyville’s tree lighting program Nov. 23 at Cook Park, but that didn’t stop hundreds of children from meeting Santa Claus.

The annual event organized by the village and Main Street Libertyville kicks off the holiday shopping season downtown.

Julie Ludwig, who has been running the tree lighting program for the last 14 years, estimated that between 2,000 and 3,000 people attended the annual event.

Ludwig said she, village staff and about five volunteers ran the event.

This year, a new backdrop was added for kids to pose with Santa in front of the Ansel B. Cook House.

The Libertyville High School jazz band played a selection of six numbers.

“We like doing these events for the community,” said Adam Gohr, director of bands.
