On Tuesday, the Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival announced its roster for 2019, culling artists from around the world.

Now in its third biennial run, the fest aims to turn the city into “the puppetry capital of the world” and will present more than 24 shows from 11 countries at different Chicago-area venues.

New programs include the festival’s first-ever First Nation puppet tale, “Ajijaak on Turtle Island” by Heather Henson’s IBEX Puppetry, presented in association with the American Indian Center.

2019 also initiates a partnership with Festival mondial des théâtres de marionnettes in Charleville-Mézières, France. Reciprocal performances by U.S. artists will take place at the World Puppetry Festival in France later in 2019.

In addition to France, puppet artists and companies from Argentina, Belgium, Chile, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Puerto Rico and Spain complete the nine-country contingent of international acts at the 3rd Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival.

The fest runs Jan. 17-27, 2019. For more information about the lineup, venues and tickets, visit chicagopuppetfest.org.
