Four workers were injured when a staircase at an East Ukrainian Village building collapsed as they tried to carry a granite slab up the stairs, officials said.
The men were hurt about 11:25 a.m. when a back staircase at a building in the 800 block of North Paulina Street collapsed, according to police.
Two were taken to Stroger Hospital and two to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, all initially in serious-to-critical condition, said Larry Merritt, a spokesman for the Fire Department.
A man with a head injury and a man with injuries to his left arm and leg were taken to Northwestern, while a man with a back injury and a man with injuries to his foot and ankle were taken to Stroger, police said.
