Say this for the 2018 White Sox: For a team that lost 100 games, there was remarkable consistency on the roster.

Eight of the nine hitters in the opening day lineup wound up as the primary players at their position, with an 80-game PED suspension making catcher Welington Castillo the exception. Three starting pitchers made 32-plus starts, and Carlos Rodon joined James Shields, Reynaldo Lopez and Lucas Giolito as a staple once he had recovered fully from shoulder surgery.

Lots of players — among them Tim Anderson, Yoan Moncada and Lopez, in particular — took advantage of the chance to fast-forward their development. Late bloomers Yolmer Sanchez, Daniel Palka, Omar Narvaez and Kevan Smith seized the chance they each were given to insert themselves into the discussion about the organization’s future.

White Sox general manager Rick Hahn always is looking for upgrades but the 2019 roster figures to be built around the players who were at Guaranteed Rate Field this season. Here’s a look at how they did and where they stand heading into the offseason:

Starting pitchers

Dylan Covey

1.51 WHIP highest among Sox starters. Could have trouble holding onto big-league roster spot.

Carlos Rodon

Opponents hitting .101 against slider. Left-hander is potential ace if he can handle full-season workload.

Lucas Giolito

Led AL in earned runs and walks allowed. Mental toughness to develop into solid starter.

Miguel Gonzalez

Made only three starts before shoulder surgery. Best he can hope for is non-roster spring invitation.

Michael Kopech

32-inning walkless streak between Triple A and Sox. Sidelined after Tommy John surgery.

Reynaldo Lopez

Fastball averages 96 mph. Don’t be surprised if he develops into an All-Star.

James Shields

Ranked sixth in AL in quality starts. Made it harder for Sox to pass on option costing $14 million.

Relief pitchers

Aaron Bummer

Opponents hit above .300 against left-hander. Project for Don Cooper, should be more effective.

Ryan Burr

2.45 ERA between Double A and Triple A. 2017 acquisition could play big role in bullpen.

Danny Farquhar

253 career outings in majors. Hoping to pitch again after life-threatening aneurysm in April.

Caleb Frare

Inflated ERA (8.31) in September audition. Lefty has the stuff but could be ticketed for Triple A.

Jace Fry

Left-hander struck out 12 per 9 innings, best on staff (minimum 10 games). Lock for bullpen, could evolve into closer.

Carson Fulmer

6.67 career ERA. Former first-round pick should get look as a reliever if he’s not traded.

Jeanmar Gomez

Sinker was hit very hard (.371 OBA). Minor-league contract probably best he will do.

Ian Hamilton

1.74 ERA, 22 saves in Double A and Triple A. Former Washington State closer could be ’19 Sox closer.

Nate Jones

Struck out more than one per inning in injury-shortened season. Health history hangs over club option decision.

Juan Minaya

Improved velocity, with some 98s on radar gun. Likely back for a third season.

Jose Ruiz

Waiver claim from Padres had 16 saves in minors. Big arm but may need more time to be ready.

Hector Santiago

Sixth on staff with 96 2/3 innings. Seems likely to be squeezed off the roster despite experience.

Thyago Vieira

Three wild-pitch inning on Sept. 8. Ability to throw 100 likely buys him time to find command.

Catchers

Welington Castillo

80-game PED ban did not endear him to GM Rick Hahn. Contract ensures another year; must help staff continue development.

Omar Narvaez

Left-handed hitter had a .794 on-base plus slugging. Offense opened eyes but must see progress in caught stealing percentage (24), other areas.

Kevan Smith

After mid-summer slump hit .333 in September. The pitchers swear by his pitch-calling and calming presence but like Narvaez must improve defensively.

Infielders

Jose Abreu

Injuries kept All-Star starter from fifth straight 25-homer, 100-RBI season. First baseman wants to end career on with Sox and should be around at least one more season.

Tim Anderson

20-HR, 26-steal season a first for a Sox shortstop. Fielding took a leap but offense needs boost to hold onto job for long term.

Matt Davidson

Home runs down from 26 to 20 for DH-third baseman, but second straight season of 165 strikeouts. Like Daniel Palka, could be a man without a home defensively.

Yoan Moncada

MLB-leading 217 strikeouts an issue for switch-hitter. Second-half strides at plate and in the field must accelerate in second full season.

Jose Rondon

Played third base and shortstop for much of September and was involved in eight double plays. His .470 slugging percentage is probably what Sox are looking for at third.

Yolmer Sanchez

Switch-hitter led team and was second in majors with 10 triples. Arbitration-eligible infielder a valuable utility player.

Outfielders

Adam Engel

Sixteen steals but a .235 average. Likely a placeholder for Eloy Jimenez unless he faces another spring training challenge.

Ryan Cordell

Batted .108 but didn’t have any errors in 15 games. Wasn’t able to challenge Engel in his September call-up so the future is murky.

Nicky Delmonico

In his last 30 games, he struck out 34 times and had a .250 OBP. Finger, shoulder and neck injuries didn’t help his cause to win a role in 2019.

Avisail Garcia

Hit career-high 19 home runs despite battling knee and hamstring injuries all season. He’s arbitration eligible for one more season but he could be a trade piece.

Leury Garcia

Switch-hitter had 32 RBIs and a career best .271 average but injuries limited him to 82 games. Will he still start if Sox shuffle outfield?

Ryan LaMarre

The former Twins waiver claim batted .303 with an .809 OPS and had 32 total bases in 71 plate appearances. Will that be enough to earn another audition?

Daniel Palka

His 27 home runs tied for rookie lead. Outfield defense is a work in progress, but for his kind of left-handed power you find a way.

Charlie Tilson

Had only two extra-base hits (no homers) in 106 at-bats. Failed to take advantage of playing time in first half, could be squeezed off 40-man roster.

Trayce Thompson

Has hit .117 in his last .177 major-league at-bats, and didn’t hit in Triple-A. Outrighted off 40-man roster in June so set for minor-league free agency.
