New Trier High School drum line members set the tempo for Spirit Week and Homecoming 2018 enthusiasm right off the bat Friday, when they marched into the Winnetka campus’s Gates Gymnasium to ear-splitting applause.
Close on their rhythmic heels were a crew of hover-boarding students whose astronautical fashions echoed the “Outer Space” theme. They, and grinning volunteers who generated wave after wave of cheers by holding up signs urging more noise, urged students and teachers alike to kick up the zeal more than a few notches.
The Trevian mascot, resplendent in his helmet and cape, patrolled the sidelines giving high fives to everyone in reach, doing his own bit to raise the decibel level to the rafters.
Students at both New Trier campuses got into the spirit in multiple ways, including dressing to match theme days such as comfy day Monday, meme day Wednesday and Friday’s class colors day.
The week-ending rallies included performances by New Trier’s cheer squad and dance team, the introduction of team sports captains, games and races on the gym floor, a DJ blasting music from the stage and some fervent mass karaoke by the massed sophomore, junior and senior classes.
All the rally fun was prologue to Friday night’s football game against arch-rival Evanston Township High School, and the homecoming dance Saturday night.
