As the new kid on the block, the Laver Cup trophy doesn’t yet carry the same sort of mystique as the Stanley Cup or the Ryder Cup, but, make no mistake, this is no ordinary trinket up for grabs.

Heading into Sunday afternoon’s final session, Team Europe leads Team World 7-5. It’s clear the tennis players, many of the world’s best, are serious about taking this trophy “home.” Yet, because the teams are made up of players from different countries, there’s no natural place for the Laver Cup to reside with the winning team. It will most likely spend the year at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I., a tournament spokesperson said.

There are no plans for the trophy to go on a Stanley Cup-like tour with the players, but don’t be surprised to see players drinking Champagne from it after Sunday’s final.

Here are five other things to know about the Laver Cup trophy.

1. One of Rod Laver’s first individual professional trophies was melted down and incorporated into the Laver Cup. Molten metal from part of Laver’s New England Merchant Bank Trophy from the U.S. Pro Tennis Championships is the secret ingredient in the mammoth trophy.

2. The Laver Cup is 26 inches tall and weighs 31 pounds, so don’t expect players to hold it over their heads for too long.

3. The Cup is solid sterling silver and its sleek design is built to suggest the shape of a rocket, in honor of Rod “The Rocket” Laver.

4. The 200 notches on the cup’s rim represent Laver’s career tennis titles, and the two sets of four rings on the base represent his calendar year Grand Slams in 1962 and 1969.

5. The curved arms of the trophy signify rivals becoming teammates, one of the core principles of the Laver Cup.

The final session of the Laver Cup begins at noon Sunday at the United Center.
