The Chicago Fire Department battled an extra-alarm shredded rubber fire at a Far South Side business Friday afternoon, officials said.
Firefighters responded about 1:40 p.m. to Ozinga Materials near 117th Street and Torrence Avenue in the South Deering area, said Larry Merritt, a spokesman for the Fire Department.
The fire was under control about 4 p.m., officials said.
Firefighters had to deal with a “Four-story high pile of shredded rubber used for fuel in other parts of the country. Stored here … and shipped,” according to the Fire Department.
