On Thursday, Sideshow Theatre Company announced its 2018-19 Season, including two Midwest premieres.
The season will kick off with the world premiere of “HeLa,” co-produced with Greenhouse Productions (Nov. 18 – Dec. 23). Written by J. Nicole Brooks, the show blends Afrofuturism with the true story of Henrietta Lacks and one little girl’s love of science. The show will play at the Greenhouse Theater Center, 2257 N. Lincoln Ave.
The second show will be the Midwest premiere of “The Ridiculous Darkness,” adapted from a radio text by Wolfram Lotz and translated by Daniel Brunet (March 24 – April 28, 2019). Directed by artistic associate Ian Damont Martin, the show riffs on “Heart of Darkness” and “Apocalypse Now” and chronicles collisions of civilization and paranoia. The production will run at Victory Gardens Richard Christiansen Theater, 2433 N. Lincoln Ave.
Selina Fillinger’s “Something Clean” will close out the company’s regular season (June 16 – July 21, 2019). Co-produced with Rivendell Theatre Ensemble, the show follows Charlotte, whose roles as mother and wife are rocked when her son is incarcerated for sexual assault. Desperate to find a way back to who she was, she seeks out work at a sexual assault crisis center and meets Joey, a volunteer coordinator and a survivor of assault himself, who allows her a glimpse of who she might be able to become. The production will also run at Victory Gardens Richard Christiansen Theater.
Sideshow’s 2018-19 Season will also include “The Freshness Initiative,” the company’s commissioning and new play development program, now in its fifth year (dates to be announced) and CLLAW (Chicago League of Lady Arms Wrestlers). The next CLLAW match will be held Friday, October 12, 2018 at Logan Square Auditorium.
