Parking problem needs fix in Fifth Avenue plan

In the most recent Naperville Sun article addressing the parking problems at the Fifth Avenue station, I was again extremely disappointed in the city of Naperville.

When I was a commuter to downtown Chicago and tried to obtain a parking permit, I discovered the wait list was over 10 years. I was fortunate enough to obtain parking in the Boecker lot but then forced to scramble to obtain daily parking when the city bought the lot. For a long period of time, the lot sat empty and earned absolutely no revenue for the city.

I was puzzled when I read the most recent proposal for utilizing the land that the city has acquired. I could not believe the city intends to add no additional parking spaces while adding residential units. They are ignoring the longstanding need, evidenced by the wait list, by merely maintaining the status quo. I think the comment that was most infuriating was from Jim McDonald, Ryan Cos. senior vice president of real estate development, who said that with “more people working from home and alternatives to driving,” there may be no need for those parking spaces decades from now.

Has he not read the paper regarding the number of major corporations that have relocated to downtown? How does he suggest they get there? The train remains the most cost- effective way.

Wake up, Mayor Chirico and council members. Take care of your residents who have been patiently waiting for you to solve the parking problem, rather than exacerbating it.
