Print ain’t dead — and, at Jackalope Theatre Company, it’s coming to life.
This month, the ensemble will stage its ninth annual “Living Newspaper” festival, inspired by the 1930’s Living Newspapers of the Federal Theatre Project. Dramatizing stories ripped from recent newspaper headlines, the lineup includes:
“YOU MADE ME DRIVE THROUGH THE CESSPOOL THAT’S CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA THREE TIMES SO YOU COULD SEE THE BAR DAVE MATTHEWS USED TO WORK AT” by Calamity West, directed by Christina Casano; “Protesters return as The Red Hen quietly reopens its doors” from The Roanoke Times, 7/5/18
“keep that same energy” by Ike Holter, directed by Kaiser Ahmed; “Woman Calls Police on Black Family for BBQing at Lake” from the Huffington Post, 3/11/18
“STILL HUNGRY” by Isaac Gomez, directed by Dani Wieder; “Impact of ‘Zero Tolerance’ on display in Texas court” from the Los Angeles Times, 7/5/18
“White Men with Ethnic European Surnames” by Nora Leahy, directed Ian Martin; “Democrats fighting internal, external battles” from the Times Reporter, 7/5/18
“The Sordid Tale of the Database” by Rachel DuBose, directed Charlotte Drover; “Florida approved concealed weapons permits without reviewing background checks” from the Miami Herald, 6/8/18
“JANUS v. AFSCME” by Dakota Parobek, directed by Abhi Shrestha; “Supreme Court Ruling Delivers Sharp Blow to Labor Unions” from the New York Times, 6/27/18
The fest will play Aug. 23-27 at the Frontier, 1106 W. Thorndale Ave.
