A 36,000-square-foot movie theater with 10 to 12 screens is part of a development that has been approved for the northwest corner of 63rd Street and Cass Avenue in Westmont.

The Village Board approved the project for Oak Brook-based Kensington Development Partners July 19.

Along with the movie theaters, the project also includes a 47,000-square-foot LA Fitness and multiple other businesses, including a Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, according to Westmont officials. The project will allocate space for up to five additional businesses as well.

The development will consist of new construction and demolition of existing structures on the site, and is scheduled to begin this fall.

The location is about 3 miles from downtown Clarendon Hills, which like Hinsdale has no movie theaters. The Tivoli Theatre in Downers Grove is also 3 miles away.

Hollywood Blvd. theater in Woodridge is 4 miles from downtown Clarendon Hills, and AMC Loews Quarry Cinemas 14 in Hodgkins, AMC Oakbrook Center, AMC Dine-In Theatres Yorktown 18 in Lombard and La Grange Theatre in downtown La Grange, are all about 5 miles, according to information from www.bigscreen.com.

The intersection of Cass Avenue and 63rd Street is one of Westmont’s most prominent commercial areas and is the heart of the village’s South Westmont Business District, according to a release from the village.

“This project will help kick-start the entire business district on the south side of our community,” said Village Board member Harold Barry III, chairman of the Westmont Economic Development Committee. “This project, along with a few other developments that are coming forward, represent over $100 million of investment in Westmont. It’s very exciting.”

Businesses located on the corner of Cass and 63rd — Walgreen’s, Burger King, and ItaliAmo — will be unaffected by the new development, according to information from the village.

The stores on the northwest corner of 63rd Street and Cass Avenue in Westmont will be demolished and the site redeveloped with movie theaters and other businesses.
