As first reported by Eater, Murphy’s Red Hots (1211 W. Belmont Ave.), a Lakeview fixture for decades, will close for good in 10 days.
Signs in the front windows are delivering the bad news that “it’s time for a long vacation,” and the restaurant will close Aug. 18.
“It’s been a long run of 30 years,” said owner Bill Murphy, “but it’s time for a change. Life is short, and it’s a matter of how you want to spend the next 30 years.”
The building, which Murphy owned, has been sold. And in it’s place …
“Condos,” Murphy joked. “Just what we need.”
Murphy said saying goodbye “to all our tremendous customers” would be painful.
“It’s a very tough thing, to be honest with you,” he said. “But there are other things we want to do before it’s all said and done.”
