Heavy rain fell across much of the North Side and north and west suburbs Tuesday afternoon, resulting in numerous viaduct floods and some road closures across the area, according to the National Weather Service.
Earlier Tuesday, the weather service issued a flash flood warning for parts of the Chicago area including portions of Cook, Lake, DuPage and Kane counties, until 7 p.m. Some areas reported rainfall totals of more than 2.6 inches.
Rush-hour rainfall meant tough going for drivers in some North Side neighborhoods. Stretches of Chicago’s streets, including Sheridan Road between Foster and Bryn Mawr avenues, had standing water.
Elsewhere, many cars were stalled in flooded viaducts with water up to their doors, the weather service reported. In Schiller Park, the Irving Park Road and Lawrence Avenue viaducts, under railroad tracks, flooded. And in Rosemont, some roads were closed due to standing water, reports on the weather service site indicated.
“Thunderstorms moving through the area this evening could pose an isolated risk of damaging winds but the more likely threat is from heavy rain,” the weather service said in a hazardous weather report Tuesday afternoon.

The flash flood warning included northern Cook and southern Lake, northeastern Kane and northern DuPage counties, according to the weather service.
Norridge, where some backyards and parking lots were flooded, saw a reported 2.63 inches of rain, per the weather service. More than 2.1 inches fell in Park Ridge in under an hour, and close to 2.2 inches of rain fell near O’Hare International Airport within a similar window, the weather service reported earlier Tuesday.
