A planned extension of the downtown Clarendon Hills Prospect Avenue resurfacing project this month has been scrapped for a year because of a planned water main replacement in 2019 that will require the road to be torn up.
The original resurfacing project of Prospect, between Ann Street and Park Avenue, will be completed in 2018. However, the additional work to repave an additional 140 feet of Prospect south of Park, where condominiums have been under construction, won’t be done this year.
Instead, the up to $25,000 approved in July by the Village Board for the work will be used to replace some of the curbs downtown.
“We realized that the water main work is going to be right in the area where we were going to do the additional resurfacing this year, and we don’t want to come back next year to do water main work right after repaving the street there,” said Mike Millette, director of public works.
Millette said the areas at which curbs will be replaced are used regularly by pedestrians.
“If it was along Route 83, it wouldn’t be a big deal, but people do often walk where we’re doing this,” he said. “We had a lot of people walking there during our Dancin’ in the Street concerts.”
The village budgeted $200,000 for the Prospect Avenue work, and the low bid came in from Chicagoland Paving Contractors Inc. of Lake Zurich for $149,900, which led to the board approving spending up to $25,000 more for the additional 140 feet.
Millette said Monday that the Prospect Avenue roadwork could start toward the end of the week and be finished by Labor Day.

The street will be close to vehicle traffic at times during the work. Full closures will take place only during daytime work hours.
The most recent resurfacing of this part of Prospect Avenue was done more than 10 years ago, and a water main was replaced there in 2012, leaving a large patch, Millette said.
