On Friday, the Goodman Theatre announced that artistic director Robert Falls will direct the world premiere of David Cale’s musical memoir, “We’re Only Alive for a Short Amount of Time,” its opening show of the 2018-19 season. Falls, who first invited Cale to the Goodman in 1988, replaces previously-announced director Tony Speciale.
A musical about family and transcendence, Cale’s solo performance piece will feature songs he has written, with arrangements and underscoring composed by Matthew Dean Marsh—performed live by Marsh and a quintet of musicians at each performance.
The show will run September 15 – October 21 in the Goodman’s Albert Theatre, 170 North Dearborn St.
