Construction of a new sewer line in Homer Glen is expected to be completed later this year.

The Homer Glen Village Board approved a $2.5 million contract Wednesday with Austin Tyler Construction, Inc. to install the sewer line along Fiddyment Creek that will serve the area between 159th and 151st streets and Gougar and Cedar roads.

With the exception of the nearby Glenview Walk Estates and Cedar Brooke subdivisions, there is no sanitary sewer service in the area.

The bid from Austin Tyler Construction of Elwood was the lowest of five contractors seeking the work. The highest bid came in at about $4.4 million.

Homer Glen officials also approved intergovernmental agreements with the city of Lockport and the Bonnie Brae Forest Manor Sanitary District to handle the wastewater treatment for the new sewer.

The new sewer line marks the culmination of nearly a decade’s worth of work to bring sewer service in an underserved area.

The village contracted in 2009 with engineering firm McDonough and Associates to study the area and come up with several potential sewer alignments. The project also required an intergovernmental agreement with the Forest Preserve District of Will County as well as easements from many property owners.

The sewer will be constructed primarily within Forest Preserve District property.

When complete, Mayor George Yukich said he hope it serves as an economic catalyst for future commercial development. New utilities combined with a widened 159th Street could help draw developers to the village, he said.
