Sunday’s Oak Brook polo match turned out to be little more than a tease for the more than 850 people who turned out to watch.

After a rainout in the June 10 scheduled season opener and cancellation of a June 24 match because heavy rains a day earlier left the field unplayable, the Butler Challenge Cup championship between the Oak Brook Polo Club and Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse Polo team started Sunday in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

But about one-third of the way into the match, after some light rain turned into more of a downpour, the remainder of the match was canceled.

“Safety comes first,” said Dan O’Leary, managing director of the Oak Brook Polo Club. “We were hoping the rain would go by in 10 minutes so we could continue to play, but it came down pretty hard, and there were some big puddles on the field.”

O’Leary said Monday that discussion were being held to determine whether the matches would be rescheduled.

The 2018 polo season still has six matches remaining:

• July 22: Heartland Cup / Jaguar Concours d’Elegance

• Aug. 5: Caribbean Cup

• Aug. 19: Chicago Polo Cup

• Sept. 9: Butler International Cup

• Sept. 22: USPA Board of Governors Tournament

• Sept. 23: USPA U.S. Open Polo Alumni Match
