The Rev. Beth Freese Dammers brought a new twist Sunday with the first jazz worship service at the Community Presbyterian Church of Clarendon Hills.

Dammers said she decided to try the different style of service after participating and observing jazz worship services at other churches.

“It’s a rich way to engage in the love of God through music,” she said.

The service, conducted on the church lawn, featured music provided by Clarendon Hills resident and vocalist Jake Youngman, along with Kailey Henderson, Kevin Chunko of Darien and Gregg Sewell.

‘It’s definitely something I hope to do again,” Dammers said.

The church, 39 N. Prospect Ave., is hosting a free screening at 10:45 a.m. Sunday July 15 of “13th, A Documentary about Race and the Prison System in the U.S.”

The documentary explores racial inequality in the United States, focusing on the prisons disproportionately filled with African-Americans.

The documentary is rated MA for Mature Audiences and is most appropriate for ages 15 and older

The film runs for 1 hour, 40 minutes and will be followed by a discussion with follow.
