Manhattan’s post office remained closed, Central Park has reopened and overall damage was minimal following Tuesday’s EF1 tornado in the downtown area, officials said.

The post office roof, however, will have to be replaced, said postal service spokeswoman Beverly Howard.

“We are still assessing the internal damage to determine the scope of work needed,” she said in a Friday email.

Meanwhile, its 15 employees are delivering mail. Retail service is being provided in New Lenox, she said.

Howard praised the postal workers, saying they have “been absolutely amazing.”

Residents also can access their post office boxes at the New Lenox office, 300 N. Vine St. until further notice, Howard said.

This facility is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Post office boxes can be managed online at www.usps.com/poboxes.

If residents use the street address of the New Lenox post office location for their post office boxes that facility will accept packages from private carriers that do not deliver to a post office box.

Anyone with questions should call 708-479-9431. Retail postal service also is available at neighboring offices in Mokena, 19334 Wolf Road; Frankfort, 21201 S. Elsner Road; and Joliet, 2000 McDonough St.

According to the Manhattan Park District’s Facebook page, clean up continues in Central Park and users should be cautious.

Village administrator Kevin Sing said only the Manhattan Historical Society’s building — the former village hall on State Street — remained without power after a falling tree knocked the electrical box off the building.

Except for the post office, the damage was “minimal,” he said.

Sing also thanked officials in surrounding towns who reached out to help Manhattan.

“We have a lot of great communities who care, but we were able to take care of it,” he said.
