When Toy Story Land opens at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the park’s famed Green Army Men will be making some new noises. And, for the first time, some of those noises will come from Green Army Women.

As part of the new live entertainment in the area, all the totally green, plastic toy-inspired performers will be speaking parts, says show director Tom Vazzana.

“Everyone’s a speaking person, which hasn’t been … ever,” he said. “I love that. It breaks that barrier down” between Green Army peeps and visitors.

And the corps is going co-ed.

“In the armed services, we have men and women honor us every day” in real life, Vazzana says.

In Toy Story Land – a.k.a. Andy’s backyard — “we stick to the Green Army story,” he says. “ We call each other ‘soldier,’ we call each other ‘recruit,’ ‘ trooper.’ We use those words now. … It’s the right time.”

The green team will appear in two separate shows, the Green Army Patrol and the Green Army Drum Corps.

For the patrol, “It’s kind of like a parade,” Vazzana says. “The whole land becomes a music track. They come out with choreography. Then they break out and play in a show stop. Then it processes again.”

For the drum corps, expect creative percussion movements.

“We picked people who were comedic as well as excellent drummers that also had that skill set of syncopated rhythms. So you’ll see a lot of un-syncopated head movements,” Vazzana says. “Then they’ll break up and just have fun.”

The goal of the creative team was to keep the immersive theme of Toy Story Land going through entertainment in the streets, maybe marching along with the Army, playing with large crayons and the oversized trademark Pixar ball, Vazzana said.

“I really wanted to bring the characters closer to the people. So we’re out on the street,” he said. “You can ride the attractions and then be immersed with anything you want to play with in the backyard.”
