Two men have now been charged with murder over the July 2017 shooting death of a 29-year-old man in the West Side’s Humboldt Park neighborhood.

Javon Almond, 20, and Ronnie Burnett, 23, have each been charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Derrick Murray.

About 12:20 p.m. July 17, Murray was shot in the upper body in the 4600 block of West Augusta Boulevard, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later. He lived in the 1600 block of South Central Park Avenue, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Burnett, of the 600 block of North Lockwood Avenue, was charged in late May, while charges against Almond were filed this week. Almond, who was in Illinois Department of Corrections custody, had a current home address in the 2600 block of South California Avenue — the Cook County jail.

Almond has been serving a three-year sentence in the DOC’s Pontiac Correctional Center, where he was admitted in March for illegally possessing a gun as a gang member.

Burnett was taken into custody on May 25 in the first block of Jefferson Street in Joliet, said Officer Ronald Westbrooks, a Chicago police spokesman. Detectives knew Burnett had an unrelated court case at the Will County courthouse and arrested him there, Westbrooks said. Will County records show he was found guilty of domestic battery in January, and was sentenced to 118 days in jail followed by conditional discharge. Since then, he has missed at least one court date, records show.

Associate Judge Sophia Atcherson ordered Almond held with no bail on Thursday, while Burnett has also been held without bail as ordered by Circuit Judge David R. Navarro, according to Cook County court records. Both men have demanded a trial.
