Veteran television journalist Elizabeth Brackett’s death was an accident, the Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled Tuesday.

Brackett, 76, died Sunday at Stroger Hospital, four days after she was seriously injured in a bicycle accident. A mother of two, the retired WTTW correspondent died of cervical spine injuries following the fall on June 13, a Tuesday report from the medical examiner’s office said.

Brackett, an accomplished triathlete, was found several feet from the Lakefront Trail near the 39th Street Beach.

WTTW reported Tuesday that Brackett’s Garmin activity tracker showed that her heart stopped and that she was without oxygen for as long as nine minutes.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Kenilworth Union Church in Kenilworth, Ill.

Brackett is survived by her husband, Peter Martinez, daughter Ilsa Wallich; son Jon Brackett; stepchildren Lisa Nuzzo, Stephanie Martinez, Jonathan Martinez and Matthew Martinez; sisters Ellen Rieger and Jill Swisher; 10 grandchildren; and six nieces and nephews.
