One of Chicago’s most essential one-man shows is going on a three-city tour.
“Twisted Melodies,” written and performed by south side-resident Kelvin Roston, Jr. and originally produced by Congo Square Theatre, is slated to travel in spring 2019. The remount of the jukebox musical, which chronicles the turbulent genius and paranoid schizophrenia of soul singer Donny Hathaway, will be produced in a partnership between Congo Square, Baltimore Center Stage, Apollo Theater and Mosaic Theater Company.
A selection of the August Wilson New Play Initiative, “Melodies” debuted in 2015 to critical acclaim during its time at the Atheneum Theatre. During the production’s initial run, Tribune critic Chris Jones wrote, “Roston inhabits his troubled man, feels what he feels, honors his complexity and sings his songs as if his life depended on doing them justice.”
The Baltimore Center Stage remount will run May 9 through 19, 2019, where it previously opened in early 2017. The production will then premiere at the Apollo Theater in New York from May 23 through June 2, 2019, with the tour finale premiering in Washington D.C. at the Mosaic Theater, June 19, 2019 through July 21, 2019.
