A bat found in Oak Lawn earlier this month has tested positive for rabies, the Oak Lawn Police Department said.

The bat, found June 1 in the area of 9600 Kenneth Avenue, is not known to have bitten any humans or animals, according to a brief police statement released Friday.

Residents who may have been bitten or exposed to a bat recently should contact their doctor and those whose pets do not have a current rabies vaccination should have them inoculated immediately, according to a memo from Cook County Animal and Rabies Control.

Cook County Animal Control advises residents to keep their pets on leash when outside the house and instructs anyone who finds wild animals like bats or skunks dead on their property or roadway to avoid handling them and call Animal Control for assistance.
