Clarendon Hills staff and officials are looking at using a portion of the village owned parking lot at 318 Park Ave. for both short- and long-term overnight parking.

The village purchased the lot, which has room for about 48 parking spaces, more than two years ago from Fifth Third Bank for $160,000.

The village leases 10 spaces to the nearby post office for use by postal vehicles. Post office employees also typically park in other spots of the lot, using blue-dot/employee stickers issued to them by the village, village manager Kevin Barr said.

“Beyond this, we typically have about 5-10 commuter parkers on any given day,” he said.

Staff recently recommended that short-term overnight parking be allowed on an hourly basis, and now proposes that long-term parking in the lot also be offered.

“The issue is how to deal with potential demand for parking from multifamily residents on Park Avenue,” Barr said.

He said the developer of the 42 new luxury apartments at 229 Park Ave., for example, has told staff of several interested parties, including current Clarendon Hills residents, who have voiced interest in the apartments, but are concerned because they have two vehicles.

“We had always assumed that the demand for residents of these multifamily buildings would include people down-sizing, as is often the case with our own residents after children have completed their education,” Barr said.

“It appears that the lot has, and will have, space available for at least some long-term users.” he added.

Staff is recommending $85 a month for long-term parking in the lot, with placards to be sold at the Police Department on a quarterly basis.

The Village Board likely will make a decision on the overnight parking proposal at its June 18 meeting.

Regardless of that decision, the lot needs to be resurfaces and striped, Barr said, noting that such project likely would be included in the 2019 village budget.

Police chief Paul Dalen said he believes officers will be able to enforce an overnight provision while continuing to enforce blue dot/employee and commuter parking during the day.
