Congo Square Theatre Company has announced its nineteenth season, a roster of shows that explores the theme “Imperfect Perfection” and includes a production from the August Wilson New Plays Initiative.
Kicking off the season this fall will be “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill,” in which ensemble member Alexis J. Roston will reprise her role as Billie Holiday in this hazy, jazz-driven revue (Sept. 7-Oct. 7). All performances will be held at eta Creative Arts
“Nativity Tribute,” held at the DuSable Museum, will follow for the holiday season (December). Based loosely on Langston Hughes’ “Black Nativity,” the annual show tells the Christmas story through gospel music.
“Jambalaya Series” will follow (Feb. 27-March 9, 2019). For two weekends, the company will stage independent film screenings and staged readings (location TBD).
In the spring, the company will stage “Single Black Female,” a two-woman show about the lives of single, middle class Black women that takes on pervasive stereotypes and complicated truths (May 3-19, 2019). Performances will take place at the eta Creative Arts.
