Winnetka residents of all ages turned out Monday to honor the memory of men and women in the U.S. who gave their lives in service to the country.

The village’s 91st Memorial Day ceremonies were supported by the Winnetka Park District, the village of Winnetka and the New Trier Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4831. They began with a parade which stepped off at the intersection of Glendale Avenue and Elm Street and headed east on Elm to Winnetka’s Village Green.

A U.S. Coast Guard color guard led the procession, which also featured members of Boy Scout Troop 20 and Cub Scout Troop 18, veterans, and representatives of community groups.

During the ceremony at Village Green, those who made the final sacrifice were commemorated with the laying of wreaths, and a commemorative gun volley by members of VGFW Post 4831. U.S. Army Capt. Matt Schachman was the featured speaker.
