It was only fitting that many of the eyes of the young children at Friday’s Clarendon Hills Public Works and Police departments open house became big, just like the vehicles that attracted them.
“I saw this on Facebook and decided to come because he really likes big trucks and police cars,” said Ryan Valach of Clarendon Hills, who attended with his son, Franc, 2 ½.

The open house was held inside the public works garage, that department’s yard in back and the police station.
Clarendon Hills resident Pam Flood was there with her grandson, Wesley, for his third consecutive annual open house, despite him not being quite 4 years old, yet.
“He comes to sit on the trucks; the bigger the better,” Flood said.
Mike and Lisa Sexton of Westmont happened to be driving by shortly after the open house began at 2 p.m. and decided to stop with their two children, Emmet, 3, and Finnegan, 10 months.
“It’s just something fun, so we decided to stop,” Mike Sexton said.
The open house offered the opportunity for visitors to meet and speak with police officers and public works personnel and to sit in the trucks and police cars.
Free hot dogs, snacks and beverages were available for visitors as were toy hard hats and other goodies for children.
The Clarendon Hills Fire Department had its most recent annual open house in October 2017.
