The York High School commencement Sunday inside the Joe Newton Field House is now part of a long history for a school in its 100th year of existence.
The class of 2018 was the 99th York graduating class and included 690 graduates, said Melea Smith, executive director of communications and public relations for Elmhurst Unit District 205.
Sunday’s commencement included a senior video, student speeches by students Abigail Ciccarone, Paola Gonzalez Guzman and Grace Tully, the performance of a song, “An Ending Like This,” composed and performed by Madeline Buckley, and the performance of the Fleetwood Mac song “Landslide” by Jacquelyn Meyer and Christopher Rieger.
Smith said York opened in 1920 at its present location, 355 W. St. Charles Road, Elmhurst, after a fire at the site of what now is Hawthorne School, 162 S. York Road.
She said the first York diplomas were given to the class of 1919, but students didn’t move into the new high school building until October 1920. The first class to actually graduate at the new high school was the Class of 1921, Smith said.
