Elgin police recovered 471.4 grams — a little more than one pound — of marijuana during the arrest of two Chicago men accused in the April 29 shooting deaths of two Elgin men, according to an Elgin police report.
Travaris Stevenson, 22, and Lee Spain, 32, have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the slayings of Mark McDaniel, 26, of the 1000 block of Todd Farm Drive, and Raymond Dyson, 29, of the first block of Dumbarton Oaks Place, who were shot in an apartment building parking lot in the first block of Longwood Place.
The two victims were found either in or near a black 2018 Chevrolet Impala, according to partially redacted a police report obtained by The Courier-News through a Freedom of Information Act request.
Witnesses gave police descriptions of the two suspects, who were seen running toward a building in the apartment complex following the shooting, the report said. An officer driving in the 1100 block of Royal Boulevard, north of the shooting scene, spotted two men matching the descriptions about a half hour after the 2 p.m. incident and police were able to taken them into custody, according to the report.
As police were talking to the two men prior to their arrests, a woman in a car pulled up and told officers she had given the two a ride to the area earlier in the day and that Spain had called to request a pickup at the intersection of Abbott and Getzelman drives. The driver arrived to see the two men in police custody, the report said.
Witnesses to the shooting were also able to identify Spain and Stevenson at the scene, police said.
The report did not say where the marijuana was found or if it played a role in the shooting.
