The Steinhatchee Landing Resort is situated where the Gulf of Mexico and the Steinhatchee River merge. Pronounced “Steenhatchee,: the name comes from the indigenous word Esteen Hatchee, which translates to “River of Man.” This resort offers up fully equipped private cottages. Their most popular times are during scallop season, which runs from July 1 through Sept. 10, where visitors can visit the nearby Keaton Beach and hunt for these scrumptious Florida treats. Two local restaurants will cook your catch for you.

The resort is a family-style, riverfront vacation retreat on the Gulf Coast. The family-friendly destination will even take pets up to 28 pounds.

Opened in the late 1990s, the resort aims to offer guests private residences with all the comforts of home in an old Florida atmosphere. Situated on 35 acres, just five minutes from the Gulf of Mexico, it’s an idyllic escape for nature lovers and anyone looking for an unexpectedly upscale yet laidback vacation from the ordinary. Hike in the shade of an old pine forest, canoe or kayak the Steinhatchee River. The location makes it ideally suited for experienced anglers, serious bird watchers and has dynamic offshore, inshore and fly-fishing opportunities.

24 cottage rentals are available in one- to four-bedroom cabin units, located just three miles upstream from the gulf and along the river. Bring your boat and fishing gear or make arrangements with a local fishing guide for a chartered fishing trip. The cottages provide full kitchens. Along with boat docks for guests, there is a children’s playground, 55-foot swimming pool, petting zoo, tennis and basketball courts, shuffleboard, croquet lawn and patio area. Indoors, guests enjoy complete fitness with cardio and Nautilus equipment (with flat-screen monitors) and an eight-person swim spa.

For something extra special, book a chartered sunset cruise for one hour for up to six people at $125 or two hours for 4 people including wine and cheese for $210.
