A new HBO series from Oscar winner Jordan Peele and “Lost” co-creator J.J. Abrams is slated to begin filming in Chicago in July.

“Hostiles” star Jonathan Majors will play Atticus Black, who embarks on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America with his friend (“Underground” alum Jurnee Smollett-Bell) to search for his missing father on “Lovecraft Country.” Abrams and Peele, a Second City alum who won the best original screenplay Oscar in March for “Get Out,” are set to executive produce.

In a tweet, Peele described the project as a social thriller/horror based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Matt Ruff.

Wunmi Mosaku (“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”) also stars, and “Underground” co-creator Misha Green will serve as writer/showrunner. Show headquarters are the Cinespace Chicago Film Studios.

“Lovecraft Country” adds to a busy TV year for Chicago. The Fox music drama “Empire” was recently renewed for a fifth season. “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago P.D.” and “Chicago Med” are also expected to be renewed. Showtime’s “The Chi” is slated to return to town in coming weeks, as is “Shameless” from the same network. The new Comedy Central series “South Side” is expected to begin filming here in the summer.

Network representatives are also set to announce shortly whether a few TV pilots that shot here in the spring have been picked up to series.
