A massive fire that ignited at a recycling center in southwest suburban Forest View Tuesday night had been brought under control Wednesday morning, officials said.
The fire started about 10 p.m. Tuesday at Lakeshore Recycling Systems, 6201 West Canal Bank Road, site of an extensive sorting facility and a garbage transfer station.
A precise cause was unknown, Forest View Village Administrator Mark Masciolo said Wednesday.
“It was basically garbage that caught fire,” he said. “It was something that started in the pile of garbage that was deposited there and it took off.”
At its height, the fire could be seen from Interstate 55, between Central and Harlem avenues. Most of what was burning was recyclable materials, WGN reported.
Limited water supply in the area prompted firefighters to summon a Chicago Fire Department boat to help extinguish the blaze with water from the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, according to WGN.
Firefighters contained the fire outdoors, Masciolo said, but it remained smoldering late Wednesday morning, and crews were expected to remain at Lakeshore for hours, he added.
No one was injured, Masciolo said.
