Aurora police released additional video footage from the area of an officer-involved shooting, but on Wednesday declined to provide dash camera footage, citing the ongoing investigation.

Santiago Calderon, 36, died from multiple gunshot wounds following a March 22 shootout in downtown Aurora involving two Aurora police officers, according to the Kane County coroner’s office. The Kane County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating.

“The Task Force is still investigating and informed us that releasing the ATM/bank video would not impede their investigation, but that releasing the squad videos at this time would interfere with their investigation,” attorney Mallory Milluzzi said in an email Wednesday on behalf of the City of Aurora.

Police said an unmarked car used by the investigators who pulled Calderon over before exchanging gunfire with him was not equipped with video cameras, and Aurora police do not use body cameras. However, police reports from responding officers indicate other squad cars that responded to the parking lot had working video cameras.

Third-party video the police department released on Facebook Tuesday includes clips from a bank surveillance system and the social media site Snapchat.

Additional footage provided to the Beacon-News in response to a public records request includes about 20 minutes of surveillance video from each of two cameras, one placed in the parking lot and one on an ATM with a view of the parking lot. Police noted slight discrepancies in timing because the two cameras aren’t synchronized. The additional video provided to the newspaper shows more of the scale of the police response to the parking lot, though the footage is dark and at times it’s unclear what’s depicted.

The first movement in the ATM video occurs when Calderon runs across the frame, left to right, followed by a police officer. Calderon exits the frame, while the officer runs behind a car parked in the lot. Another officer runs into the frame, and both officers run to a white SUV parked several spaces to the right of the smaller car. More officers trickle in, gathering behind the SUV until a group heads out of the frame, in the direction Calderon had gone.

Police in a statement Tuesday said the investigators pulled Calderon over about 9:45 p.m. March 22 for an alleged equipment violation. Calderon was fatally shot in the parking lot on South LaSalle Street between Galena and Downer Place after exchanging gunfire with police, and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Aurora Police Chief Kristen Ziman previously said the investigators involved, Matthew Huber and Colin Griffin, have each been with the department for 10 years and were both put on paid administrative leave while the case is under investigation.
