The driver of an SUV that crashed into a CTA bus shelter Monday evening in a collision that killed a woman and injured five other people, including a 5-year-old girl, has been issued traffic citations in the crash, according to Chicago police.

The accident happened around 6:25 p.m. Monday in the 9400 block of South Stony Island Avenue in the Calumet Heights neighborhood, police said. The male driver has been issued citations alleging failure to reduce speed and operating an uninsured motor vehicle, according to police. Police Major Accidents detectives were still investigating to see if more serious charges might be brought.

The crash happened when a white BMW X5 SUV headed north on Stony Island collided with a Chevy sedan making a left turn. The BMW driver lost control and crashed into the bus shelter, killing 67-year-old Janice M. Gilmore, who was on the sidewalk nearby, police said. She lived in the 9300 block of South Merrill Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

A 5-year-old girl and two women, 20 and 21, at the bus stop suffered minor injuries and were taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital, police said.

A 24-year-old passenger in the Chevy was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said. The Chevy’s driver refused medical attention. The 30-year-old driver of the BMW was taken to Trinity Hospital, but information on the extent of his injuries was not released.
