Events focused on nature and the environment take center stage in Naperville when Earth Week kicks off April 22.

Residents can show their support for the planet at a variety of programs bening hosted by the Naperville Park District, the DuPage County Forest Preserve District and the Will County Forest Preserve District.

The Naperville Park District, in collaboration with the City of Naperville and other groups, is offering these events:

*An Earth Day Fair will be held from noon to 4 p.m. April 22 at the Naperville Park District’s Fort Hill Activity Center, 20 Fort Hill Drive. The event will include activities for children, tips on how to green living, energy-saving information and eco-friendly vendors. LED light bulbs will be given away for free.

*The annual Arbor Day tree sale sponsored by the City of Naperville will be held from 8 a.m. to noon April 28 at the Public Works Service Center, 180 Fort Hill Drive. Multiple types of trees will be available for sale and city staff will be available to help load them into vehicles. Experts will be on hand to answer tree questions. The city will also have pre-ordered rain barrels and composters available for pickup. Both can be ordered online at www.naperville.il.us/arbordaytreesale/.

*A town hall meeting on “Climate Science and Tomorrow’s Forecast” will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Naperville Central High School Auditorium, 440 W. Aurora Ave. The interactive discussion will include presentations from WGN-TV Chief Meteorologist Tom Skilling, climate scientist Don Wuebbles from the University of Illinois and Accenture Global Environment Director Mike Nicholus. Registration is required and will be made available to the public on April 22 at www.napervilleparks.org/earthweek.

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is seeking people to remove litter, pull non-native plants and plant seeds at Naperville-area forest preserves. Volunteers ages 8 and up should register at least five days in advance of work dates by calling 630-206-9630.

Work days are set for

*April 22: 10 a.m. to noon at Pioneer Park, 1212 S. Washington St., and from 1 to 3 p.m. at Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve, 29W128 83rd St.

*April 25: 1 to 3 p.m. at Pioneer Park, 1212 S. Washington St., and 4 to 6 p.m. at Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve, 29W128 83rd St.

*April 23 and 26: 4 to 6 p.m. at Goodrich Woods, which parallels Washington Street in Naperville.

*April 24 and 27: 4 to 6 p.m. at Burlington Park, 1002 Douglas Ave., Naperville.

The Will County Forest Preserve District is seeking volunteers to “lend Mother Earth a helping hand” by removing invasive plants from 8 a.m. to noon April 28 at Whalon Lake on Royce Road, west of Route 53/Bolingbrook Drive. Volunteers could also be asked to cut, stack or haul items as part of the cleanup effort.
