FC Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas has a “strong interest” in joining the Chicago Fire this upcoming summer transfer window, as first reported by Sam Stejskal and Paul Tenorio of MLSSoccer.com Friday.
The Fire have been interested in signing Casillas, 36, since the offseason, sources told Stejskal and Tenorio.
If signed, the World Cup winner would not occupy a Designated Player spot, and it remains unclear if Targeted Allocation Money would be used in a potential deal, or the terms of Casillas’s possible contract. The Spaniard’s current deal with Porto is set to expire at the end of the Portuguese league season.
Casillas is in his third season with Porto since leaving Real Madrid in 2015, starting in 80 games over the course of three seasons, despite losing his starting spot at the start of the current season.
