A Huntley man pleaded guilty Wednesday to unlawful delivery of heroin in the death of a Lake in the Hills man who overdosed in 2016.
Terrance Kampas, 28, was sentenced to five years in prison. Charges of drug-induced homicide and other related charges were dropped by McHenry County prosecutors. Kampas will receive credit for 439 days served in jail since his arrest. He also could receive credit for good behavior.
Prosecutors said Kampas was on probation for a felony drug-related case in Cook County when on April 9, 2016, he delivered heroin to Travis Hugo, 26, in Lake in the Hills. The heroin contained furanyl fentanyl, an extremely potent and deadly synthetic opioid.
Assistant State’s Attorney Victor Escarcida said the drug-induced homicide charge was dismissed based on the “totality” of the case and after discussions with Hugo’s family. He said the sentence still “holds (Kampas) accountable for what he did.”
Kampas will be held in McHenry County Jail until late May when he will be transferred into the custody of Cook County to deal with his probation violation, attorneys said.
Upon his release, he will be on mandatory supervision for two years.
