Rain couldn’t stop the Winnetka Park District’s 45th annual Easter egg hunt, a district official said. The Saturday event, complete with 13,950 eggs and an impressive 1,500 kids and parents, simply shifted from West Elm Park across the street to the Skokie School.

“It was a huge event. We had both gyms full of people, along with the cafeteria where we had the actual hunt,” said Kelsey Raftery, the district’s marketing manager. “We were able to put our inflatables up, and the DJ was there, too.”

Youngsters, some of them wearing bunny ears, scavenged the cafeteria for eggs containing candy and tiny toys. Some lucky hunters found eggs with tickets in them allowing them to win bigger treasures, Raftery said.

Family dogs got in on the fun later with the park district’s annual Doggie Egg Hunt, which Raftery said has been an annual event for at least 10 years.

She said about 30 pups took part, with dogs and their humans heading back to the park to track down eggs with dog treats in them.
