Jade Telphia is a student at Elmwood Park High School. She said she wants to be a doctor when she’s older.

Q: Where did you grow up and go to school?

A: I grew up in Elmwood Park. I came to the area when I was 4. I’ve been here all my life. My parents are from Jamaica and came to the United States when they were 19.

Q: Do you visit Jamaica?

A: Yes, I just got back two months ago.

Q: What activities are you involved in at Elmwood Park High School?

A: I’m in basketball and track and field.

Q: What do you like about your sports?

A: They’re really fun. I broke a record my freshman year in long jump and in the 100-meter dash. I’m trying to break more records this year.

Q: Are you currently in season for track and field?

A: Yes.

Q: What position do you play for basketball?

A: I’m a point guard. I feel like it’s a fun environment to play with my team.

Q: Who’s your favorite athlete?

A: I really like Jamaican runners. For basketball, I like Derrick Rose.

Q: What do you like about Elmwood Park High School?

A: It’s a nice atmosphere. There’s something here for everybody. If there’s a new student, they will fit right in. There are different activities for everybody’s interests.

Q: What do you like to do for fun?

A: I like to relax and hang out with my friends.

Q: Where do you want to go to college?

A: I want to go to University of Illinois at Chicago. I want to be a doctor.

Q: Why do you want to be a doctor?

A: There are a lot of people in my family in the medical field. I want to make a difference. I feel like helping people stay healthy is unique. My mom’s a nurse, so I want to one up her!
