, where the Fuller Center for Housing will celebrate “the year of the shero” with food, music and a silent auction. Every woman attending will receive a heart-shaped necklace or red scarf, symbolizing capes worn by super heroes.
This is our fifth annual hero party,” said Yvette Ewing, director of the Fuller Center in Waukegan. “We’ve done them all over Lake County, this time we’re bringing it home to Waukegan.”
At the event, attendees learn about the Fuller Center, which is part of an international national nonprofit organization working to help people find affordable housing and rise from poverty.
The Waukegan-based nonprofit helps veterans and others build homes in which to live, Ewing said. “We also do mental, physical and spiritual wellness,” she said. “The heart of our program is to help people figure out their purpose. We believe everyone has a super power.”
More than 300 volunteers help with community gardens, building houses and doing outreach work, she said.
“At the party, we celebrate that network of heroes.”
Members of the public come to learn more, help raise funds and enjoy a night out, she said.
“It’s a fun night of eating, fellowship and celebration. You’ll see all races, all cultures, all ages come together. People come to our parties because it’s the place to be.”
Attendees will hear background music from the Motown and Beatles era, she said.
“A local chef will create our cuisine — which will be mostly comfort food,” she said. Vegetarian, meat and vegan dishes will be served, she said.
The silent auction will include handmade items, gift baskets with wine, gardening utensils and other items, as well as yoga classes and other services.
Ewing said it’s an important time to celebrate women, and that’s why the event is called “The year of the shero.”
“I’m a veteran and I’m female. I’ve been through the ‘Me Too’ situation in military. We’re not showcasing the political side of this at the party, but we do want to celebrate women, she said.
“Men are invited to bring daughters, mothers, sisters, female friends and neighbors,” she said.
Every woman who comes will be adorned with a red scarf or heart-shaped necklaces made by a volunteer, Ewing said.
