The American Legion Post 974 and Auxiliary Unit 974 in Franklin Park are seeking to recruit students from the Leyden Township area for their American Legion auxiliary programs, according to members Gene Korus and Cathy Zito.

The programs will be held during the summer months.

“They’re really great programs for high school students,” Zito said.

Gene Korus, a past American Legion commander, said the 82nd Illinois Premier Boys State event will be June 9 through 15 at Eastern Illinois University . Korus said the event is for those finishing their junior year and going into their senior year.

According to the Boys State brochure, the program is a week-long government simulation. Participants will learn about how the American political system works through mock primaries, elections and assemblies. The event consists of lectures, activities and classroom work.

American Legion Auxiliary Illinois Girls State 78th Session will be June 17 through 23. Girls State will also be at Eastern Illinois University. Zito said it is for girls entering their senior year of high school.

Girls State is a simulated government program based on the Illinois government.

“They form a government, run for office and campaign,” Zito said. “Once they’re in office, they can write resolutions.”

Zito said the experience is “amazing” and teaches girls about government and civics. Zito is hoping to attract those from East and West Leyden high schools. She said the girls don’t need to be A+ honor students to participate. The girls must possess leadership qualities.

“This program promotes citizenship, Americanism and knowledge of our government,” Zito said.

The 2018 Youth Police Program is available to both boys and girls ages 14 through 16.

“This program is first come, first serve,” Korus said, adding the event will include 60 participants throughout the state.

“Students should be in good physical condition due to the rigorous training,” Korus said.

Korus said the main fundraiser to help send students to these programs will be held May 12 at the American Legion in Franklin Park. Those interested in applying for Girls State should contact Zito at 847-560-0459. Those interested in Boys State should contact Korus at 630-327-1224.
